Goal 5: MATH 171-03

Mathematics: Statistics, Dr. Shoenthal, Fall 2016

This goal was fulfilled by AP Calculus AB at Nelson County High School, but due to nursing requirements, I had to take Math 171 (Statistics) at Longwood as well.

Going into this class, I expected it to be similar to the math classes I had taken in high school (mainly calculus, as it was the most recent math class I had taken), but I was completely wrong. While calculus and statistics are both advanced math classes, they focus on utterly different types of mathematical thinking and application. Calculus focused more on solving math equations, while statistics focused more on solving math word problems. I personally felt like calculus was a much harder course for me, and I think that taking this class in high school made taking statistics in college seem much easier. While statistics wasn’t a style of math that I was used to, I feel like I adjusted to this unfamiliar style rather quickly. Every statistics class at Longwood is required to do a project, each of them differing based on the professor. My professor, Dr. Shoenthal, required us to do a project that included the numerous banners around Longwood’s campus that were up during the Vice Presidential Debate. I have attached the results from this project below.
