Goal 13 – Written Discourse

Advanced Writing Seminar:

In this class I was able to advance my writing skills and understand different skills and forms that are used based on audience. We completed many reading journals that were based on our comprehension and analysis of different literary pieces and learned how to construct formal business letters. The major project in this class was the creation of some sort of program that would solve a problem within our society. Within the general theme of this course, which was Youth Culture, our job was to address and tackle a solvable issue facing contemporary American youth. I chose to focus on alopecia education. I created a program called Wacky Wig Wednesday, that would teach children about understanding, acceptance, and alopecia.

The document below was one of the public documents I wrote that would help get my project idea up and running. In writing these different documents, I had to pay close attention to audience, purpose, forum and tone of each piece. I wrote a formal letter to superintendents, created a presentation for students, constructed a lesson plan, wrote a grant proposal, and created this blog post. This class allowed me to fully grasp how to use different rhetorical strategies to appeal to different audiences.
