Artifact: Creative Brief & Case Study for Posters (.pdf)

ENGL 215-50 is an honors course, titled “9/11: Loss and Redemption” and focused on how society was changed after 9/11 and how we can redeem ourselves. Dr. Lund wanted to emphasize that our class has grown up with whatever our parents decided to teach us and their ideals, and that we can step away from that and should be able to analyze our own ideals to see if they are ours or our parents. We also read pieces of literature such as “In the Shadow of No Towers” by Art Spiegelman, “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, “A Visit From the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan, and a few episodes of “Person of Interest” on Netflix. These are very different styles of literature that cover different time periods and topics, but Dr. Lund showed us that we can pull from the past to learn how we can treat the future. The artifact was a way for us to integrate what we are learning in class with our major, and I decided to collaborate with Lauren Quezada to create a set of 8 posters based on those four pieces I mentioned before. We would create two posters for each piece of literature, as well as write a creative brief and a case study going over our creative process. In the Google Drive folder, there are four posters by me and four posters by Lauren Quezada. Lauren was tasked with creating posters for “All the Light We Cannnot See” and “Person of Interest”, while I was tasked with “A Visit From the Goon Squad” and “In the Shadow of No Towers”. We mostly experimented with different creative methods for these posters, such as combining photo and digital graphics, handlettering, or using unconventional margins. This would help us in the future in being more adventurous with our designs, and also being able to take an idea from someone else and being able to convey that visually in an appealing but clear way. This would be important in client work because the client would want us to send certain messages or convey certain attitudes around their product or company and we will have to visually represent those attitudes or messages.
