Artifact: Research Poster (.pdf)
ENGL 150 is a course based around research and writing. Students had the opportunity to learn various research methods and how to navigate the Greenwood Library database, and some basic writing skills such as citing in APA. The purpose of this assignment was to create a poster that sums up the research gathered on a specific topic relevant to the course theme: censorship. During the course, we had learned about the establishment of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and the criticisms it had received in the movie-rating business. In learning of this, I was curious to research the more controversial rating system of today: video game ratings and if they actually helped keep age-inappropriate materials out of the hands of children. The poster sums up what information I had gathered and the key points I used in my essay. I cite my sources and bring up opposing arguments that my key points will argue against. This assignment was created at the end of the Spring 2018 semester by myself. In doing this assignment and the final research narrative for this class, I got the chance to show what I learned about how to research effectively and efficiently and how to analyze my sources. I can apply these writing and research skills to anything in the future, whether I’m writing a cover letter or a 10-page essay for a class. In the future, I think I would like to look into more citation methods that are commonly used, as I now know APA and MLA. I want to be able to have a diverse selection of methods so that I am prepared for future classes and their requirements when writing.
