Goal 11-Wellness
In order to fulfill my Fitness goal, I decided to take Physical Concepts through Exercise. I have to admit that upon taking this course that I was very much out of shape. I hadn’t been physically active in any sort of sport since my senior year of high school, where I was in the marching band and played for the varsity tennis team. I also had the mindset of not taking the class seriously; after all, I did hear that the classes met once a weak, the exercises were feasible, and I only needed 10,000 steps a day to meet the 100,000 weekly quota. I found all of this to be true on the first day of class, but I did struggle with finding the proper form for some of the leg exercises. It was after that embarrassing scene when I realized that I needed to get in shape outside of our weekly meetings. I found myself practicing the various exercises listed in the videos several times in the dorm and going for long walks with my suitemate in order to meet the step requirement. After a few weeks of this I began to see the walks and trips to the gym as sort of a bonding experience with my best friend rather than a requirement. I found that I either fell very short or far exceeded my step requirements due to my busy schedule, but there were plenty of extra credit opportunities and Canvas quizzes for us to bolster our grades. I also learned that PHED is more informative than many may believe. Physical Concepts not only focuses on the exercise portion, but also health in general. My favorite part of the course that I could apply to everyday scenarios was how stress really affects work performance. After watching the video filled with empirical data, it made me change my lifestyle. Instead of waiting until the last minute (sometimes literally) to finish my work, I would plan ahead; that way I could get a full eight hours to stay on top of my work. In the end, I am extremely grateful for all of the health lessons and concepts that PHED taught me, and I continue to apply them throughout both my academic and work life.
For my Fitness artifact, I enclosed the Mindless Eating powerpoint I made which emphasizes based on empirical data that low financial resources correlate with poor eating options.
