Honors Preview Night

If there is anything I regret not doing in preparation for going into Longwood, it would be attending the Honors Preview Night.  I never knew about this lovely event until I was asked to host a potential Honors student.  I was thrilled upon hearing that there was such an opportunity for a student to have a chance to see dormitory life first-hand and have a mentor to answer any questions or concerns they might have.  I immediately thought that every high school senior should be able to do this, and said yes to hosting a student without any slight hesitation.

I have hosted a total of three students with regards to Preview Night, and I have not once considered it a mistake.  All of the guys I hosted were genuinely interested about all of the different aspects of Longwood and university life as a whole, and it was a privilege to answer their questions.  By doing so, I realized that was expressing my enthusiasm about my school to them, and seeing them enjoy the ideas as much as I do makes me happy even thinking about it.  All three have or will be attending Longwood University.

My first Preview Night student actually lived not even ten minutes away, and to talk about home and mutual friends was exciting.  I was pretty shocked when he told me that he applied to eight schools, and had already been accepted into some bigger ones.  My immediate thought was, well why apply to Longwood, and conveyed this to him.  Instead of an answer, he asked me why I chose Longwood over other schools.  I told him that the area, faculty and staff, and the dedication they have into seeing one succeed cannot be topped, and that it was the best decision I ever made.  He smiled and told me that was exactly why he was considering Longwood.  Hearing that made me literally almost cry tears of joy. The other students have asked me the same question, and I always jump at the heel to tell them why Longwood is one of the best schools out there.  I still keep in touch with all of them, and my first student is one of my closest friends today.  Hosting Preview Night on a Friday night may seem terrible to others, but to me and other Preview Host it was a dream come true to see new faces excited about Longwood.
