Intro to Residential Learning (EDUC 376)

Fall 2019

In this class, we learned about various topics that affected students at Longwood University. As a Resident Assistant (RA), we were exposed to different dilemmas that could make us better leaders within our community. Moreover, we were exposed to these kind of topics to be better aware of our diverse residents. By doing so, it made us RAs learn, grow, and expand on our knowledge. It also helped us spread our knowledge to our residents to help them succeed. Such topics that were discussed in class were drugs, alcohol, resume builders, motivational tips, bullying, dating, and many more. At the conclusion of the class, we had to create a research project that allowed us to correlate it to problems that students may face at our university. Below is an image of the poster that was on college students losing loved ones.

This class was very easy to attend to. What I really liked about this class was that we were able to discuss topics we were personally facing and what our communities were facing. This allowed to create a safe haven for the RAs because we felt like we could discuss any problem and another RA would be experiencing something similar. After we would have a discussion, Dean Larry would give us some insights about the certain topic and we would further discuss. He would provide helpful brochures or show us videos. This allowed us to expand what we already knew because we would hear other people’s thoughts and opinions. I learned many new topics, such as drunkorexia, that I was not aware of. Moreover, I further learned about international students, which was relevant to my floor because I had a couple international students. Overall, this class was truly an eye opener because we learned about topics that are not normally talked about in other classes.
