The open-minded format of the class allowed for discussions and conversations within a controlled environment. I was able to listen to my classmates experiences within society which opened my eyes to a different side of society. I learned the importance of empowerment and encouraging other women throughout their endeavors. Looking back at myself before this course, I am now educated about issues in the media that I did not previously not know much about. I am able to stand firm in my beliefs while respectfully listening to and understanding the opposing factors. I believe that the material covered in this course will be helpful to me while caring for patients in the hospital.
My favorite part of the class was that we viewed the material in books, graphic novels, television series, and films. These various forms of the media allowed for me to relate my experiences to an artifact in society. Some of the materials we looked at were hard for me to connect with directly, however, I was able to relate it to another source I had previously seen. I chose to include the paper I wrote for Green Book, a 2018 film I watched for the intersectionality and representation unit. This film struck me as powerful because it included various situations that an African American dealt with in the 1960’s. Another film I analyzed was I Feel Pretty starring Amy Schumer. The knowledge I gained from this course completely changed how I viewed the movie because I was aware of every situation where a rude or improper comment was said about a female. This course has helped me to be more mindful of issues in the media and my daily life, which I can easily be unaware of.
