Media and Democracy (HONS 395)

Media and Democracy was an honors special topic course taught by the Vice President of Longwood University, Justin Pope. This course mainly focused on how the media influences the people and what controls the media. It also focused mainly on Facebook and Twitter rather than other forms of social media. Those two are the most common where misinformation is spread and many users are quick to believe and repost. For my midterm assignment, I wrote a paper about the spread of misinformation on the Facebook platform.

Overall, I enjoyed this course as it began to open my eyes to the many issues within our media, whether that be within news channels or social media. With technology these days, things can be spread very quickly. This course reinforced the importance of fact checking something before spreading the news with others. I now feel more confident in my knowledge of the media and how the democracy influences what becomes news.

Posted below is the final paper I wrote for this course. I focused on the reporter’s side of news because this is a topic I wanted to learn more about. I enjoyed reading articles while better understanding what goes on before news gets released for the public eyes.
