In this course, the focus was on the five main religions of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. I enjoyed the learning style of this class because I was immersed in actual texts and readings from each religion rather than a summary within a textbook. These texts included the sections of the Quran, Bible, Torah and writings from some of the religions greatest philosophers. History was a prominent theme as these religions worship ancient gods. It was interesting to compare and contrast each religions version of how to world was created. Before each class, we were to write a reflection of the given reading and topic. This gave me the opportunity to better understand the topic in class and each religion on a more personal level.
Aside from religious texts, there are many important traditional ceremonies and aspects of the culture of each religion. Through student presentations, I was able to view various forms of art such as statues, grand paintings, or pieces of pottery. Also, I was able to incorporate my interest in the medical field to these religious practices. There are some branches of these religions that do not believe in modern medicine and this is important for me to remember in the case that I receive a patient within one of those categories. I look forward to using the information I gained in this class through my future nursing career.
