Sociology 101: Principles of Sociology

This class was officially my first ever college class because it was Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9 am. This class taught me about making sure you give your best on every assignment you get because in college you don’t get many opportunities to change your grade. Also, I learned that some professors want to come in and lecture and leave. They want you to learn on your own outside the classroom as well as seek help on your own. They want to see you their office hours.

During this class, I learned about people and their cultures and how they perceive things different form people that are not of the same ethnicity. Each race has a stereotype related to them that usually is not true at all. Also, each group of people is statistically different in numerous areas of life like socioeconomic status. I learned so much about the different people of the world and I was trying to understand the norms and values of these people, so that I can apply this knowledge to my career as a nurse.

Understanding people and there cultural background can be vastly important in nursing care and in the world in general. Every person is different and may have certain traditions and values that must be respected when caring for them. They may have specific conditions when it comes to care and postmortem care as well. Nursing is all about understanding patient’s needs and communicating with them to meet these needs. This class helped me understand that people are different and I need to respect different people’s ideals.

This essay was written during this class and was focused on the stereotypes and ideas that come with different races and ethnicities. This paper is a representation of the class and what I learned during this class.
