Nursing 330: Nursing Care of Children and their Families
During this class I was able to learn more about Farmville as a whole and the surrounding counties. I learned that there are not a lot of resources here for families and there is a lot of poverty. Head Start is a community daycare program that provides educational opportunities for students. They specifically target at risk children who need help to ensure they are developing appropriately and meeting target levels for children education wise. These programs lack funding because there are so many kids that need help and there are only a limited number of spots, employees, and resources to go around.
My classmate and I decided we wanted to help out a little bit. We wanted to educate the children on health promotion measures in order to ensure safe practice and prevent them from getting sick. We did research on what children like and brought prizes with us to educate the kids. We provided a educational lesson about when to wash our hands and why we wash them. Also, we taught correct technique when washing hands to ensure the effectiveness.
I learned a lot during this experience and I was able to give back to the community that has allowed me to come to Longwood and learn so much. I learned that this is what being a citizen leader is all about and how giving back to people who need help is important. I really am grateful for the opportunity to spend time with the kids and having fun at the same time.
This is our poster that we presented at the Honors Poster Fair about our experience at Head Start educating health promotion measures to the kids.
