Philosophy 320
This course, along with the others I’ve taken with Dr. Blincoe, was very impactful for me. The subheading for this course is Market and Morals, and it was essentially an overview of different economic systems and their respective benefits and drawbacks. We covered capitalism, socialism, and a few other alternatives like distributism. I had a lot of opinions on this topic going into the course because I was interested in the topic previously and had done some reading. I was introduced to some perspectives that I might not have considered otherwise, as well as some authors that I probably wouldn’t have read. I really enjoy learning more about topics like this because it’s connected to so many other things. People often don’t like discussing things like this because it’s so fraught with political tension, but if people could just step back and see things from someone else’s perspective they would be able to understand the reasons for that tension.
For our final project, a classmate and I wrote a dialogue between two fictional people that argues the merits and drawbacks of capitalism and socialism. I was able to draw from a really interesting book that I read, Facing the Anthropocene, by Ian Angus. I also used some other sources and statistics to argue Michael’s perspective in this assignment. My group partner also used some great sources and we were pleased with the final result. Writing a dialogue was a much different experience than usual but I enjoyed doing it.
