Attached is a research power created by Kyra Valovick and myself during the spring 2020 semester. This was an independent research study with Jessi Znosko with help from Dr. Pederson and Dr. C. Franssen. This research project was testing the effect of volunteering on stress level hormones. We tested these in graduate student volunteers. It is important to note that this is an ongoing research study due to the limited about of time and previous studies regarding this kind of test.
This was my first ever real research project and it is something that I want to continue doing. I love seeing how things play out such as having no results to start seeing out hypothesis in action. This course really emphasized to me my love for science and see what affects what within the human body and outside conditions. This research was very special to be because I wanted to see myself how volunteering affected stress levels. It has really helped me to show how important it is to take care of your body. Even though our saliva wasn’t being tested, we had the opportunity to volunteer ever Friday at Heartland Heroes Horses. I could feel the impact of volunteering on my body even after one day. To see the data come to life was a whole other wonder. I hope to continue research in the near future with things that interest me as such. There is a very big difference when you do things you love rather than things you are just doing to check it off. This was something I loved and I knew that. Long term, maybe I will consider getting my doctorate in nursing research. Who knows?
