Reflection Section:
Contemporary issues in biology are important to discuss because it affects a whole range of people and is relevant to the present day. The artifacts I present are great examples of contemporary issues in biology. The first artifact is about deep brain stimulation (DBS). This is a method to combat depression in many patients. By using this treatment, patients will be able to overcome their mental illness by increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine. This assignment taught me how biology can be used to treat people. This is a contemporary issue due to the invasiveness to combat this mental illness and the mental illness itself. The second artifact is similar to the first in dealing with treatment for people. The second artifact is about vaccines. Many people do not believe in vaccines and think they do more damage than good. This is a contemporary issue due to society’s view on vaccines. These two artifacts taught me to properly examine the data rather than believing society’s view. I can look at the biology behind different methods, in this case, vaccines and DBS, and analyze their benefits for humans. The third artifact is about invasive species in America. This is a contemporary issue due to its damaging effect on wildlife and people’s ignorance of how to remove it, as well as its impact on agriculture Through this assignment, I was able to understand the different mechanisms of invasive species, especially Microstgium, uses to invade habitats around the world. By examining its biology and mode of transport, I was able to understand why it is one of America’s worse invasive species. By applying my biology knowledge to contemporary issues in society, I can scientifically understand why it is an issue and find different methods to combat it or find ways to make people feel more at ease. By learning this skill, I can remove emotions and think logically through issues based on the biological facts presented. This skill is important to have, not only in my field but in every major/field.
