The assignment above integrates chemistry and biology by testing the efficacy of brominated parabens on Streptococcus salivarius. By recognizing the pronounced effect parabens have in the body and its prevalence in cosmetic products, my partner and I ran a series of tests on different parabens. These tests resulted in brominated parabens limiting the microbial effects against Streptococcus Salivarius.

The link above is a content paper assignment for Phragmites australis. The content paper integrates physics and biology by examining its declining population. I examined intrinsic growth factors for these species and created a graph model that clearly shows how intraspecific competition will influence extinction in some sites. Furthermore, I discussed how a change could be made to reduce intraspecific competition and increase the survival rate.

The presentation above integrates chemistry into biology by discussing the lack of certain neurotransmitters in connection to depression. The presentation describes the toll depression has in humans, what depression is, and ways to combat it like Deep Brain Stimulation.

Reflection Section:

Chemistry and physics are important aspects of biology because they are the basis for it. These fields are always interwoven and connected with one another and are important for a better understanding. For example, in artifacts one and two, I integrated chemistry. In artifact one, I tested the efficacy of brominated parabens on Streptococcus salivarius. By testing different chemical structures on benzene rings and examining which kills Streptococcus salivarius better, I was able to find a safer alternative rather than using paraben. The same follows for the third artifact. By examining the chemical structure of neurotransmitters and human physiology, scientists can determine which neurotransmitters can decrease or increase a person’s depression status. This increases the researcher’s knowledge of how to better combat depression and other mental illnesses. The second artifact focuses on the integration of physics and biology. By examining population numbers and integrating different physic equations, I can understand if competition is truly impacting the population. If it is, I can further examine which type and create a graph to better present my findings. By integrating physics and chemistry, biology is further and better explained. By learning how to integrate chemistry and physics, I can understand other people’s research and examine if the research is significant or not. This skill is important to have because I plan to use it in my career.
