Greetings!

My name is Holden Allen. I am currently a senior student within Longwood University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders program. Being an individual who has personally been a physical therapy patient for the majority of their life, the medical field and professions of medical therapy are topics which I am both extremely familiar with and have a high reverence for. Operating as a therapy patient as well as personally shadowing speech-language pathologists has allowed me to develop an acute appreciation for the field of speech-language pathology and the clients served within this profession. I take much enjoyment in talking and engaging with individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life. Some favorite hobbies I enjoy pursuing include drawing, building Lego models, reading, as well as playing the ukulele and piano.

The purpose of this ePortfolio is to present a selection of writing assignments that I have submitted for Longwood University’s ENGL 470 Professional Writing Skills course. The documents on this website which include items concerning résumés, professional correspondences, brochures, press releases, formal presentations, and formal reports reflect the results of collaborative and independent writing projects. Considering how this course has personally benefitted me, taking ENGL 470 has allowed me to receive a plethora of rewards and information that I will be able to utilize and implement within my future career and life. Relating these benefits to the course outcomes, I was able to learn how to tailor my writing to specific contexts, rhetorical situations, design principles, as well as target audiences for assigned activities ranging from internal communication messages to formal reports. Moreover, independent as well as group projects have allowed me to further refine my skills of presenting material in oral and print mediums as well as utilize collaborative and group leadership skills. Collectively, these assignments have provided me with valuable skills that, aside from already assisting me in areas such as graduate school applications, will undoubtedly positively impact my ability to produce clear, concise, organized, and professional documents within my future career.

Course Outcomes:

  1. analyze and produce writing genres according to the rhetorical situation of workplace contexts;
  2. create professional documents that use plain English principles (to targeted audience);
  3. conduct research to create content for a variety of professional documents (memos, letters, reports, etc.);
  4. create professional documents that use design principles;
  5. practice oral communication skills to present content effectively (enhanced with multimedia tools);
  6. participate productively in collaborative projects.
