Love, Sex, and Friendship
Junior year, Spring 2022:
I was so excited to take this class because I loved Dr. Blincoe’s Biomedical Ethics class so much. I kind of feel like Dr. Blincoe is constantly performing a social experiment on the class to see our reactions. Every day he would play a new song and ask us if we knew it. Every day he would ask us a thought-provoking question and then would walk out of the classroom just to walk back in the other door. There was an extra credit opportunity for one extra point to give him your phone for a week. Of course, I did and it was fantastic. I love having the opportunity to disconnect from my cell phone and connect with nature instead. Each week we were also required to read a book of our choice from a list of books that I chose ____ and freaking loved and then also take a silent walk for 30 minutes. Then we had to report our honesty, and of course, lying would suck so you do it anyways.
We read the books Plato’s Symposium, this book was such a funny outlook on how philosophers saw love. We also read the four loves which I hated because C.S. Lewis was still stuck in some of the misogynistic ways. We also watched Black Mirror episodes which were cool to analyze. I enjoyed all the assignments in this class because they made me think outside the box which is sometimes hard to do in the everyday fast-paced life where you just do what you need to do and that is it. I really gained an appreciation for reflection and taking the time to love myself.
My artifact for this class is my Friendship paper where I took my idea of friendship and compared it with what was outlined in Plato’s Symposium. I find what is important is truly the base human experience of friendships rather than the idea of a great friendship.
