Biomedical Ethics
Sophomore year, Spring 2021:
In this class, we learned the basics of Philosophy, Aristotle, Kant, etc. We wouldn’t really go through PowerPoint but we would look at different examples of morally challenging situations. We would have a lot of readings and then have a class discussion. I had this class with my friend Ashley Wilson. This room was always dark and it made me sleepy, I got a Starbucks addiction from this class.
Our first section was on the basics, and our second section was on abortion which is crazy considering Roe vs. Wade was overturned recently, and finally the right to death. These topics are obviously extremely heated but when put through the lens of different philosophers of moral ethics it was easy to break down. However, it was never put in the perspective of right and wrong but more so situational-specific decisions. I really enjoyed the class discussion because there were so many varying opinions. This class also helps me have a more open-minded perspective especially since I want to go into the medical field.
I have attached my artifact here. This artifact is my final personal reflection for the class which outlines the answers to these questions:
What unit or piece of writing was most meaningful or interesting to you? Why?
-Did any of our readings/discussions change your thinking on some topic related to the course content?
-What did you learn that was surprising?
-In what way did this course make you want to go further and read/learn more?
-Did any part of the course make you reexamine your own thinking such that your behavior may change in the future? If so, how?
