Becker, S. & Palladino, J.  Assessing faculty perspectives about teaching and working with students with disabilities.  Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, 29(1), 65-82.

The authors in this article discuss how students in higher education have experienced dismissive faculty who may have intentionally or unintentionally devalued their rights to appropriate accommodations. As a result, many students with disabilities who experience these situations will often perform poorly in postsecondary education and end up leaving the university without finishing their degree.  This impacts students as they then have a more difficult time finding a job in their chosen career.  The article pushes for more professional development to encourage faculty to become more versed in this particular population and diminish any perceived prejudice and misunderstanding surrounding students with disabilities.

Gonzalez, C.A. & Elliott, M. (2016).  Faculty attitudes and behaviors towards student veterans.  Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, 29(1), 35-46.

This article focuses on faculty’s treatment toward student veterans who may present with disabilities that include PTSD, depression, anxiety, and TBIs.  There is a correlation between faculty members who have a connection with the military outside of academics and those faculty members being more supportive of student veterans.  Researchers suggest that when faculty members have that connection with the military, they are more likely to develop a relationship with student veterans who in turn perform better academically.

Sniatecki, J., Perry H. B., & Snell, L. H. (2015).  Faculty attitudes and knowledge regarding college students with disabilities.  Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, 28(3), 259-275.

The researchers assess faculty attitudes toward students with disabilities in college settings.  Results indicate that faculty perceive students with disabilities in a positive light who have overcome many challenges.  However, the most negative perceptions with students with disabilities are those with a mental health disability.  Furthermore, the authors state the importance of the Disability Services staff and the imperative role they play in educating faculty members on how to navigate accommodations and work with students with disabilities.  Researchers highlight that not all faculty are as accepting of the knowledge and expertise Disability Services staff has and encourages better working relationships between faculty and Disability Services staff with accommodating students based on their disabilities.
