What is Executive Functioning?

  • Refers to parts of the brain that keep track of planning, organizing, and time management skills
  • It is usually broken down into three main areas: working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control
    • Working memory is when a person is able to keep information in their mind and then use it in a certain way
    • Cognitive flexibility is when someone is able to think about something in multiple ways
    • Inhibitory control is being able to control one’s self, ignore distractions, and resist temptation
