I’ve always been involved in different types of service through my Girl Scout troop and Silver Award, my church, and through the National Honor Society and the International Thespian Society at my old high school. I helped with things like fixing up the flowerbeds before a show to liven the appearance of the front of the school, organizing and helping with a free book fair at a local low-income elementary school, as well as even building a fence with a dog shelter right behind open woods.
I wasn’t sure about the service opportunities that I would find in college, especially because I knew absolutely nothing about Farmville, but Longwood has so many service opportunities within itself to encourage students to step out.
You can volunteer in your major, such as in the Andy Taylor center, or even for a class. My brother helps out with the Detention center for his Spanish class by teaching English to immigrants, which he loves to help out with as a criminology major.
You can serve the Longwood community through helping out at open houses, tutoring, and many other opportunities. There are organizations that have a main goal to serve Longwood and the outside community, as well as all the philanthropies the sororities and fraternities support around the area and off campus.
Service is creating a benefit for your community, through your goals, helping others accomplish goals, or just trying to better a situation or circumstance, and Longwood provides the perfect opportunities for all of them.
