The American Political System – Dr. Mary Carver
When I first signed up for classes, this one class worried me. I took AP Government in high school, my senior year, and I was awaiting the results of my AP exam when I first registered for classes. I knew this would be an issue because I would either pass the exam and have to find another class to take a month before moving to Longwood, or I would fail the exam and be terrified of what would come for this class.
I ended up getting a 1 on the AP exam, which can also be achieved solely by showing up to the exam and writing nothing on the paper. That was the worst part of the day that scores were released. I would have been fine with a 3, which is passing but not enough to have the transfer credit, but a 1 was the absolute worst you could get.
This class ended up being a lot better than I had feared after the test result. I ended up taking notes and partially remembering the Declaration of Independence, and I now have four pages of notes on the Constitution, but this was certainly a great class that I took. It was required, of course, but it was the best choice to take for my first semester.
Dr. Carver was fun, slightly personable, and was able to relate real life examples we would be able to comprehend and use to understand our realities and futures with relating to our current government.
My artifact from this class is my notes on the Declaration of Independence, as I had no clue what to expect from a college class and I feared I would be quizzed on this document, and when I showed the notes to some of my classmates, they thought it was kind of funny because they didn’t even read the article. She just wanted us to have the general knowledge of the documents to understand what we started as as a country, which I believe was important with the notes.
