Historical and Contemporary Insights

HIST 221 – US History Colonial-1877

This course fulfilled my Historical and Contemporary Insights pillar for the Civitae curriculum. This course had an emphasis on the political, economic, and social forces that have shaped its development.

Through this course I learned that knowing just the material on the slide will not cut it for this class. I needed to focus more on the content the teacher was speaking then the slides. Through this class I learned how to analyze historical and cultural differences over time periods. I looked through primary sources every week for this class and was able to learn how to find evidence that would help me understand the concept and construct evidence based arguments. I didn’t like this class as much due to my dislike in history. For every quiz I had to put an extra effort to learn the material so that I could ace the quizzes.

This is an analytic a paper using primary sources to analyze the conceptions of freedom and democracy developed by free and enslaved African-Americans in the Antebellum United States. Through this paper I can demonstrate my understanding of the complex relationship between African-americans of the era and the rhetoric of democracy. It also allowed me to show my critical thinking skills.
