Book Club Week 7

In chapter 19, James Clear discusses how we often experience boredom when we repeat the same things over and over again. The impact that boredom has on our good habits can be detrimental, we lose our momentum and quit after we get bored. One of my work habits that I experience boredom in is reading. I find myself reading the same sentences multiple times and get easily distracted when I am reading because it is not something I find interesting. I think that a way for me to overcome the boredom and maintain my good habit is to use a reward to motivate myself. For example, I find myself bored when I have to read 100 pages for an assignment/project however. If I split my time up and read 20 pages and then rewarded myself with 10 minutes of TV or phone time it would motivate me to finish my reading because I know I will engage in an activity I do enjoy. I think another way I can set myself up for success by doing this is to take notes on the 20 pages I read so that I can remember everything I had reviewed when I come back and read another 20 pages. Although this may take a while (about 3 hours), that is usually the time I spend reading and rereading again to understand what I just read. Reading 100 pages can sometimes take me a whole evening and sometimes I may not even remember what I read. By taking notes this can allow me to recall everything I had gone over already.

In chapter 17, James Clear talks about having an accountability partner to motivate us and hold us accountable for our good habits. This concept can be used when working with clients because sometimes a client may feel anxious about doing a leisure activity by themselves such as working out. Having an accountability partner can lessen the anxiety and hold the client accountable for going to the gym. It can also help because you never want to let your partner down and it makes it more difficult to make excuses.
