Using and Evaluating Evidence Based Care

Throughout my time in the nursing program at Longwood, I have had many opportunities to use evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. I have also had the opportunity to evaluate current research on various practice topics. One example was a group project I worked on in my nursing fundamentals class. This project evaluated safety measures taken related to patient mobility practice. I worked with other students to determine which mobility practices were the safest and most efficient. We were able to determine that the best practice for patient mobility included multiple team members and properly working lift devices. The other part of nursing research is evaluating current studies and critiquing those studies to determine validity and usefulness. This is what I did in my nursing research class when I wrote a quantitative article critique to determine the validity of a study on factors affecting student feelings of belonging and workplace satisfaction. While this study did not focus on patient care practices, it was still an important study to evaluate and critique. Both projects helped me gain important researching skills that will help me expand my knowledge of evidence based practice in my future career.
