Education 376: Introduction to Residential Learning

I took this class for my Resident Assistant position at Longwood. In the class, we read materials discussing the social issues that college students face and learning more about the social skills that will be helpful to deal with these situations. The class was discussion based, with other rookie RAs sharing their experiences about the given social issue. We discussed depression, mental health, addiction, fear, anxiety, and many others issues.

I really enjoyed this class, a group of RAs all taking a class together always created good discussion, as RAs tend to have the confidence to share their knowledge and opinion. I also thought the few assignments were well tailored to the topics discussed in class. We had to lead a community program, conduct a survey for all our residents, and create a poster for a student issue not discussed in class. My social issue was about family estrangement. For me, my relationship with my family has improved with distance, but for others, it is something that can be confusing and lonely.

My favorite part of the class was the RA update section in the beginning of class, where RAs talked about interesting incidents and struggles that have been going on. Some of the stories were really crazy and it allowed RAs to vent their frustrations in a healthy way.

Here is my artifact which is a poster that I made for my final assignment on family estrangement.
