Entering Research 1

In this class, I was informed about research opportunities at Longwood and I worked in groups with fellow LifeStem members to conduct research on the Chesapeake Bay. We were also taught how to write a formal scientific article.

I got to meet some professors and ask about their research. Someone from my class actually got to start her research the next semester with the professor she met. I wasn’t able to find a professor to research with the next semester but this class did make me start thinking about doing research early.

When I was first given assignments, I struggled very much in learning how to write an introduction, but it was good to be in a class that spent much time providing feedback and giving us a chance to improve our work. Writing all the parts of a scientific paper comes much easier now.

Finally we spent a large part of the class on a research project. We tested for chlorophyll concentrations in the Chesapeake bay and made conclusions about the quality of the bay. We found that chlorophyll-a concentrations were low for historical measures but was in the natural range of fluctuation. Low chlorophyll-a concentrations indicate a lack of algae in the water. My presentation will serve as my artifact.
