The link above is a poster on the microbial diversity at Laner Park in Farmville VA. We were able to observe the microbial community and infer that the plates showed a difference in the microbial diversity between wet and dry soil at Buffalo Creek.
Reflection Section: Being able to evaluate and interpret an experimental design is essential, not only for scientists but for everyone trying to prove a claim, statement, or etc. It allows the experimenters to draw valid conclusions from the experiment. In each artifact, I was able to conduct an experiment which I drew inferences from. For example, the experiment I conducted in the third artifact did not provide much data. This lesson taught me that not every experiment goes well. It taught me why experimenters take months to years to complete and finalize their data. Fortunately, my lab partner and I were able to rely on my professor who helped us. The ability to repeat an experiment and arrive at the same point validates the results and conclusions. The first artifact, I was able to conduct the experiment with the class and draw valid conclusions from the results. This task was difficult to complete but taught me the importance of having different experimental measures. At the beginning of the experiment, we had close to 5 experimental measures, however, as the weather and the environment changed was accounted for the experimental measures decreased to 2. This taught me how important it is to carefully evaluate and apply the appropriate experimental design. Nonetheless, the group was able to draw valid conclusions from what we had. These lessons taught me how essential it is to apply the appropriate experimental design to the data. Secondly, being able to carefully and correctly interpret and evaluate the results. These lessons have developed me into a scientist that is able to draw valid conclusions, not only form my data but also other scientists’ data. This ability will most definitely be used in college, as I watch the news, as I read things online, and everywhere else.
