ENGL 265 – Writing & Rhetoric Citizenship

Writing & Rhetoric Citizenship

I took ENGL 265: Writing & Rhetoric Citizenship with Dr. E. Derek Taylor in the Fall semester of 2019. I enjoyed this course, especially this professor, and everything that it was able to teach me. Throughout this course, we addressed the proper formatting for a variety of settings and areas of study, which covered the rhetoric portion of the class. In order to cover the citizenship area of study, we looked at several issues within it, everyone providing their own viewpoint and educating others on the topic; each student had addressed something that had a topic that they resonated with and had previously learned about in another course.

Overall, the class informed me of different writing formats and helped me to develop more professional writing skills, while also exposing me to aspects of citizenship that I would not be able to see from another course.

The following artifact is my final presentation, entitled “Why It Matters.” Our final presentation was about a societal issue that we felt needed to be addressed that had been brought up in another course. I chose the topic of weight shaming; this issue had been addressed on multiple occasions in several of my courses, as I was involved in classes based upon health and overall well-being. Furthering my knowledge on the topic allowed me to gain a deeper understanding on body image and how, in the future, I can address these issues as a medical professional. The majority of the presentation was given verbally, and the PowerPoint slides online have a picture to represent the main ideas that were addressed.
