Physical activity has always been very important to me and I have always played sports growing up. I was excited to take PHED 101 my first semester of freshman year. It was a time to socialize and get exercise, as well as learn more about the importance of exercise during a busy college student’s life. This class was a part of me learning about what kind of exercise not only made my body feel good, but also made my mind feel good. It wasn’t until college that I learned how important exercise was for my mental health.
I have included a bi-weekly assignment from PHED 101, which was a measure of the amount of exercise we were getting. The assignment actually required us to reach 10,000 steps daily. This was no problem as an athlete. It really showed me that I needed to let my body rest for one day a week to let myself recover. I had never worn a smart watch, so remembering to wear it daily was difficult for me at first. This was one of my first realities of the demand of any college class I was about to take in my career. It was helpful to start out small with a 100 level class like PHED to help prepare me for the upper level general education and biology classes I had yet to take.
A step counter is great way to continue to make fitness and physical activity a priority. This will always be necessary in my life as a stress reliever and to take overall care of my body.
