How do I get started?

Congratulations on taking the first step to participating in a science fair competition! Here you will find some resources to help you get started.

  1. Start here with these short videos:  https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/activities/science-fair-project/
  2. Decide on your area of interest and seek out a mentor. Talk to your teacher first, and they may become your mentor or be able to direct you to someone else who can.
  3. Once you have a project idea, narrow it down to a testable question.
  4. Plan your experiments. Determine what materials you will need, as well as any equipment that you will need to collect your data (e.g. thermometers for collecting temperature data, measuring tapes for collecting distance data, etc.). Plan out how much time you will need to complete your experiments (don’t wait until the last minute!). Determine where and when you will complete your experiments. Do you need to use the school labs, or can you do it at home?
  5. Analyze your data.
  6. Prepare your report.
