Integrated Inquiry into Culture and Language (SPAN 320)

I have taken Spanish classes from kindergarten all the way to senior year of high school, and while they have always had a mix of learning about the culture along with the language, they were mainly focused on grammar and vocabulary. I always wanted to go more in depth with the cultural side of these classes since I have always enjoyed learning about places around the world. This course, which fulfilled my world language perspective, gave me the chance to learn more about hispanic culture while still focusing on a mix of language and culture.

The first area we jumped right into was poetry. This was difficult for me because I did not have much experience working with metaphors and figurative language in a foreign language. However, the strategies I learned to understand the poems, similar to how one would in English, really helped and I quickly was able to identify the different parts of the poems and understand the figurative language. Below, you can view one of the first poems analyzed for this course and see the process of pulling out vocabulary and identifying the parts of the poem.
