I took HON MATH 171 in Fall 2021 with Dr. Emerson-Stonnell.
Throughout the semester, we learned about how to calculate statistics using real world problems. Many of the surveys we used for the equations were surveys of Longwood students. Some of the surveys were just from our class while others were from students across campus. As honors students, we were asked to not only determine these statistics but also explain what they meant. One way that we did this was by writing a paper based off of our findings. We were given the answers to a survey and were asked to come up with a question, find the answer, and explain what our answer was through a paper. The first time we did this project, linked below, we worked in groups. These papers helped me to better understand how statistics are found and used especially when used to make certain groups look good or bad. This class helped to prepare me to notice when companies or articles are purposefully using only specific statistics to help their cause.
