In this class, Representing Nonhumans, we spent the semester reading literature from the Victorian to the Post-Modern, from Frankenstein to World War Z in an attempt to understand what our portrayal of the intelligent nonhuman in literature shows about us. For our final project, we had to pick a medium with a nonhuman present and analyze it, and then present our abstract to the class. I unfortunately can’t fit that presentation in here as the file is too large, but I had a lot of fun with it. Not just because I got to watch Godzilla for homework, but because I got to teach people about the history of one of my favorite movies. This was an awesome exercise in distancing ourselves from the medium to analyze it, as the true message of Godzilla requires a Japanese perspective to be fully understood.
