Global Citizenship

SPAN 110

As part of Longwood’s general education degree program Civitae, every student must take two semesters of a foreign language to broaden their cultural awareness and inclusivity. I chose to take Spanish because it was highly suggested to me to know as a healthcare professional. Spanish is the second most spoken language after English in America. In middle and high school, I took French for 5 years because my dad’s side of the family is all French-Canadian. Because there are many linguistic similarities between French and Spanish, it was sometimes difficult for me to not mix up the French words I already knew with the new Spanish words I was learning. However, it was also helpful that I did know French because it made it easier for me to understand the sentence structure. I enjoyed my SPAN 110 professor a lot and found her easy to work with, so I also took her intermediate Spanish course the following semester. Unfortunately, I do not have any assignments to show for this class because all of our work was either turned in on paper or completed using a website that I no longer have access to.
