Writing and Rhetoric
This beginning level English course was taught by Dr. Haffner who inspired me to challenge myself. Despite what the title of the course implies, Dr. Haffner spent a lot of time teaching my class to step out of the box and explore our creative sides. English is not as structured as high school made it seem and Dr. Haffner knew that honors college students have memorized and mastered that “structure” and made us all step out of the box we built around our own minds.
Academic writing was important for Dr. Haffner to teach, but he know most of us already knew how to write academically. Thus, after the standard research paper he gave us other challenging and creative work to open our minds to the idea of creativity within academic writing. As you will see below, this is an assignment that was supposed to show us how challenging ourselves can give a better outcome in the end. I was originally just supposed to write a set of poems. However, he had another classmate challenge me and force me to use different fonts in order to create contrast and interest in the looks of the poems. This assignment helped me to connect all the little lessons and practice writings within the class and truly understand that writing is not as clear cut as it seems. Now I look at each assignment as its own entity for me to find its structure, rather than using what I already know.
