I was very eager to take an American sign language course because it was something I have always wanted to learn. ASL is such an important form of communication that should be known by everyone. This course not only taught us how to sign with proper form, but it also taught us the importance of inclusivity  within the deaf community. Those who are deaf and hard of hearing must adapt to the hearing world when in reality, individuals who are hearing should help accommodate for those who are hard of hearing. This course was very hands-on and we got a glimpse into the deaf community. As a requirement for this course, we had to attend a Saturday program at a PCA event in Richmond, VA. PCA provides classes for families who need to learn ASL as well as counseling services for these families. This program does such good work and it has a huge impact on these families. I learned so much ASL at this event because I got to learn from deaf teachers and interact with deaf students so my ASL knowledge was greatly exercised.
