In the Cormier Honors College at Longwood University, everyone is united by the importance they place in a solid academic standing. In order to challenge these students, the honors college requires each student to complete 8 honors courses during their time at Longwood. These courses are specially geared toward honors students and include more rigorous work, in-depth analysis of topics, and class discussion. Although these are often my most difficult classes, I also look forward to them the most. Being in a class made up of only (or mostly, in some cases) honors students is a unique experience, as everyone in the class truly wishes to be a part of the class. Honors classes are also a great opportunity to take courses outside of your major and discover more about yourself and your interests. By the end of my second year at Longwood, I have already completed 6 honors courses.
Another Scholarship requirement for the Cormier Honors College is to maintain a 3.25 GPA in Honors classes and overall. This may seem daunting to some students, as honors courses are often more rigorous, but the Cormier Honors College often works with students and helps them, as they truly want students to succeed. For me, this certain requirement has not been an issue. As of the Summer of 2021 I have an honors GPA of 4.0 and an overall GPA of 3.92. For two semesters I have been on the President’s List (GPA of 4.00), and for my other two semesters at Longwood I have been on the Dean’s List (GPA of 3.5-3.99). Overall, I feel that the scholarship requirements set up by the Cormier Honors College are a unique challenge that pushes students to achieve the best they can academically.
