HONS 495- The Problem of Evil

I was very worried for this class, I was a freshman taking a senior level philosophy based course. I had never taken philosophy but  had heard terrible things about it. I tried going into the class with an open mind hoping that it wouldn’t be that bad. Then I saw all the books we had to read and I began questioning the course; however, after the class began I realized the readings weren’t that bad and I could handle it.

We had quizzes on the readings everyday which at first I hated until I realized they were helping my grade. Growing up I had gone to church and been involved with the church but before this class I had never heard of the problem of evil. I was able to learn in depth about the three kinds of problems of evil: logical, evidential, and existential. I agreed with some of their arguments and disagreed with others due to my own personal beliefs.

Towards the end of the course we had to write a paper on the problem of evil and relate it to our major. I panicked. I was a nursing major and had no idea how I was going to relate that to religion. I ended up writing about how nurses see horrific things everyday but in the end still have faith which you can see below.

Overall, I am very glad I took this course because it helped me grow as a person and see/listen to other people’s views instead of only focusing on my own. I also grew as a writer because I had never written a philosophy paper before.
