1.5 Physics and Chemistry

Students will be able to integrate physics and chemistry concepts into relevant
biological contexts.

Science has always been my passion while biology is my main focus I have always had a love for learning any type of science. Chemistry and physics are important to biology because they both give us information on how the world works. Chemistry is important to biology because all living things depend on the interactions of atoms, molecules, and compounds to make up the world around us. One assignment that I was able to connect back to my knowledge of biology was the Hess’s Law lab assignment that I did in CHEM 112. Hess’s Law is the total enthalpy change is the same no matter the amount of stages or steps in the reaction. In the end the total enthalpy change is the summation of all the changes that happened in the reaction. I related this back to biology through the idea that when we consume food and when we work out we burn calories. The food that we consume for energy just goes through a chemical change. While working out the same amount of energy is being released from the food that we consumed.
