A Sustainable Lancer

A Sustainable Lancer, also known as CTZN 110, satisfied the foundation course and the Cormier Honors College requirements and was one of the first Honors courses I took when I began my educational career at Longwood. This course focuses on developing critical thinking, civil discourse, and ethical reasoning to explore the components of citizenship through inquiry-based learning.

Based on my experience in this course, it was interesting. At first, I did not know anything about sustainability or what it means to be sustainable within society. As I continue with this course, I learn about different components of sustainability and how being sustainable impacts the environment. The thing that was interesting about this course was exploring Longwood’s effort to be a sustainable campus. My classmates and I met and interviewed different individuals across campus to learn about their role on campus and their contribution to help Longwood become sustainable. Through this course, I learned how to develop and ask the right kinds of questions and conduct research to find the answer to those questions. After completing this course, I continue to use the skills I acquired to contribute to my growth as a student and a prospective special education teacher.

The artifact I picked to showcase my work in this course is the event recycling fast sheet. One project I worked on focuses on thinking about other ways Longwood could do to be sustainable. With this project, I worked with my classmates to investigate event recycling. We looked at the University of Virginia’s initiative of event recycling through their Game Day challenge. As we worked through this project, my partner and I researched event recycling and Longwood’s effort in event recycling, which helped us develop our questions to ask a representation from the Office of Events and Ceremonies. Following our interview, we reviewed what we learned and created a presentation to share with our peers about our findings. Using the information we research and the interview responses, we made our fact sheet to summarizes the information gathered to share with others to learn more about event recycling. I have included the event recycling fact sheet below:
