Human Growth and Development

Human Growth and Development, commonly known as EDUC 245, fulfilled the human growth as a function of social, political, economic institutions pillar and the Cormier Honors College requirements. This course focuses on the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development of individuals and how development interacts with their environment.

Based on my experience, this course served as a review and continuation of a similar course I took when I was in high school. As a prospective special education, it is essential to review how students grow and develop because it serves as a reminder that development varies between individuals. I enjoyed the course structure because it was a mixture of lecture, discussion, and interactive activities, which kept me focused during the two hours. This course enables me to expand my knowledge about the development of students and its application in the classroom. As a prospective teacher, it is essential to know where your students are typically at in their development and how you can, as a teacher, impact their development.

The artifact I picked to represent my work in this course is the three ages project. This project focuses on looking at how children develop at the early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescent stage of development. For this project, I selected three individuals from each developmental stage and asked them questions about their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Based on the interview, I compiled their responses and connected them to what I learned in the classroom. With this project, it was interesting to see the concepts I have learned in class in a real-world setting and show how development varies between children and what they experience in their environment. I have included my three ages project presentation below:
