Service, according to the Cormier Honors College, includes service projects and fellowship opportunities. The honors college invites their students to move into their dorms a week early at the beginning of each fall semester for the Honors Retreat. Obviously this made me nervous, how could they possibly give me something worth a whole, free week of my summer?
After a nasty thunderstorm, the stressful move in, and a bit of time to meet my new roommates, we were officially on this retreat. We were divided into groups and we would all do some sort of service project throughout the week. My group got the privilege of Farmville town clean-up. We had a few days together prior to our service day, but the actual day of service allowed for an immense amount of fellowship with my new classmates. We cleaned up several parking lots, around creeks, and we even collected data that the “Clean Virginia Waterways” group can use for their records.
This day of service was only a glimpse into what Longwood is all about. There are always opportunities to provide service to our community. Longwood and the CHC obviously value service and its impacts.
