Service

While service is a key pillar of the Cormier Honors College, service hours are not a requirement for members. I actually enjoy that aspect of this pillar, because I believe people should preform community service because they want to and not because they have to meet requirements.

While hours are not required, the honors college helps provide students with the opportunity to give back to the community while growing as a citizen leader in many ways. First, at the annual leadership retreat, I was able to go to Heartland Horse Heroes farm where I helped power wash horse stalls, change out water buckets, and landscape. I have also volunteered at multiple honors open houses to give tours of the honors spaces on campus, and even hosted a perspective student.

However, my drive to give back to my community does not end with honors college related activities. Through other organizations like HSA and Tri Sigma Sorority, I have tabled for the Hearing Charities of America to bring awareness of their mission to campus and volunteered at the Robbie Page Memorial Play Atrium at UNC Chapel Hill Children’s Hospital.

Completing these hours has helped me grow as a citizen leader because I can see the positive impact of my actions, and I am able to learn more about the issues and needs of my community.
