The scholarship pillar of the Cormier Honors College (CHC) just makes sense. Students pursue higher education to learn, and it seems obvious that any honors college would make learning a top priority of its members. However, the CHC takes a unique stance on the education their members receive, which can be summarized with the motto “it’s not harder work, it’s different work”. As a member of the CHC, I can stand by this motto, as my learning experience through honors and the learning opportunities available to me are different to my non-honors experience.
Instead of a basic schedule of lectures, the honors courses I have taken at Longwood, have provided me with a hands-on, discussion based education that has allowed me to learn and experience the world through different lenses. Students of the CHC also continue their learning outside the classroom through opportunities like the annual leadership retreat, which teaches students skills such as communication, team bonding, and of course leadership, and through service opportunities both on and off campus to help students learn more about issues in and around their community.
