Goal 3.5

In this reflection we will discuss my growth in performing competently in a professional setting. The only professional setting I can think of is the Longwood Showcase. This showcase has sadly not been in person for two years because of COVID-19. However I did get to experience it my Freshmen and Senior year so I can asses my growth very well. In my second semester of my freshmen year was when I first did my showcase for BIOL 250 which was intro to  cell biology and genetics. I did a poster on seeing if a person’s phenotype which is if they like cilantro was the same as their genotype which means if their DNA said that they liked cilantro. We did a poster presentation for this course and I have been shy to present all throughout high school and my first half of my undergrad career. This presentation was no different. I believe that I get nervous when I present something that is not in my own understanding or my own words. I constantly need to try and read of the board but now it is much simpler for me. This was clearly shown my senior year when I took BIOL 360 and the Longwood research Showcase was back in person. Dr. Franssen had us present a poster about planaria regeneration in different environmental effects. For example, in warm, cold, and room temperatures. This was then presented at the showcase. What I learned is that I put everything in my own words and presented everything really well. I didn’t even look at my poster instead would point at images to help the audience understand the points I was making. The skills that I acquired from doing the Longwood Showcase is to have confidence in my work and something I learned about myself was that I can be very charismatic when I need to be and when it is appropriate in a presentation. This is definitely a skill that I would want to master because public speaking is a huge thing when it comes to the scientific community and presenting your work in front of people. As a medical science liaison I will need to continue to be funny and talkative in order to keep good connections with people in the field and have really good people skills so this helps a lot.
