In the 2020 spring semester, I completed my internship with a directed study with Dr. Lunsford on Math + Art. My main objective was to research the relationship of art and fundamental mathematical concepts including symmetry, geometry and perspective to show how math and art can intermix. I explored how artists like M.C. Escher used these concepts to create different types of tessellations, and how group theory and other elements of abstract algebra can be applied. I kept a sketch book with notes and drawings, and I created some tessellations of my own using math expositions. Because the semester was cut short, I have yet to present my research, but I am looking forward to hopefully being able to at the Fall 2020 Research Inquiry Day. I am very thankful to Dr. Lunsford for making the time to be able to do this directed study with me and for everything I learned. I am hoping to show my research on Research Day in the spring of 2021.
