HONS 495: Critical Looking

This class is my favorite honors class that I have taken. It was so much fun while also very in-depth in material and discussion. The focus of the class was about visual art and using it to critically look at different subjects such as myth, chance, media, and process and find how they connect. We visited the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia in February to talk to artist Ray Kass and look at his exhibition called “Riverrun: New Works” in which he created large scale watercolor polyptychs to show the combination of different elements in nature. We also made different artworks of our own at the LCVA, and we created sunprints during the online portion of the class. While I have no desire to be an art critic, the class allowed me to think differently about artwork and not be afraid to question different works. I am saddened that the class was cut short and that we did not get to create a final project to display at Research Day, but the professor still made the online portion something to look forward to.

Below is a review/response paper of an article titled “Death of the Author” which questions where the meaning of a work comes from.
