Throughout CTZN 110: Bodies and Citizens, we looked at numerous periods throughout American history in which certain groups of people were oppressed and/or weren’t given control over their own bodies. This could be as a result of slavery, laws, or simply social constructs. As our final project, we were tasked with planning a ‘CTZN class’ that dealt with different aspects of a similar subject. After designing this class, we gave a three minute thesis talk (or 3MT) on our plan.
For my ‘class,’ I decided to focus on a subject rather close to me – differences in athletics. The focus mainly revolved around Title IX and arguments both for and against it. The project also branched out, looking at issues such as gender representation at the Olympic Games and the historical racial inequality American sports.
Throughout this project, I feel that I was able to learn a great deal about Title IX and why it plays such a crucial role in Collegiate sports. I also learned, however, that the issues surrounding Title IX and gender equality aren’t quite as simple as “make everyone equal,” and that full equality for all is likely impossible.
